Safe Home Remedies For Dandruff

Geoff White asked:

Shedding skin is a natural process of skin renewal that takes place all over the body including the head area everyday. However when fungal infections gain access to favourable areas and conditions, skin shedding can increase substantially.

The fungal infection causing Dandruff is known as Malassezia. Malassezia feeds on oil secreted by hair follicles and increases skin renewal turn around times from a couple of weeks to a couple of days. The infection is spread by communal use of towels, combs and brushes. Before treatment can be conducted the type Dandruff must first be identified as being either waxy or dry dandruff. Waxy Dandruff occurs in patches on the scalp when oily sebum mixes with dry skin cells. Dry dandruff is present when small white pieces of skin lie loose on head or is attached to hair. Various remedies are available to treat dandruff including home remedies.

Treatment for dandruff can take form of prescribed or natural remedies. Prescription remedies are available from your physician and natural remedies you can make yourself at home. Caution must be excised with home remedies to ensure that they are safe. Chemical reaction can result from various chemicals being mixed as well as poisoning from ingredients recommended in home recipes. The following home recipes are safe and reliable to use in treating all types of dandruff:

Hot olive or Coconut oil – Massage hot olive or coconut oil on scalp before bedtime. This will moisturise the skin assisting itchiness and flaking. In the morning rub onto scalp lemon juice mixed with vinegar. Leave 2 minutes and wash hair with good quality moisturising shampoo.

Rosemary, Sage, Thyme or Neem – Make a strong tea-like solution from either Rosemary, Sage, Thyme or Neem leaves by adding the leaves to boiling water and leaving to brew for 24 hours. Strain and pour water over just-washed hair and leave in. Style your hair as usual but keep styling products to the minimum as these products can increase dandruff.

Aloe Vera – Rub crushed fresh Aloe Vera leaves or gel onto scalp and leave for 15 minutes before you wash you hair.

Beetroot – Boil beetroot, make a paste and massage onto scalp before bedtime. Please avoid using red beet as it will stain your hair as well as clothing and linen. White beetroot would be best.

Egg – Beat three whole eggs with three tablespoons of water. Rub mixture on damp hair and massage onto scalp. Leave in for 15 minutes. Wash hair with lukewarm water.

Aspirins – Dissolve two Aspirins a quality dandruff shampoo. Leave the mixture on for 3 minutes, rinse thoroughly and style as normal.

Best Dandruff Shampoo

asked:

So to start of with, I guess I should probably describe exactly what dandruff is. Well, dandruff is basically when newer skin cells push your old skin cells on your head to the surface, making them visible. So really, everyone has dandruff because everyone does shed his or her skin every couple weeks or so. But what classifies an individual, as having dandruff is the fact that they have a fungus on their head that essentially acts as a catalyst and speeds up the entire process, causing them to shed their skin at a much faster rate. To treat dandruff, only the best dandruff shampoo would suffice.

There are currently several dandruff shampoos on the market, and I’m sure many of you have heard and seen some of the commercials on television. The thing with choosing the best dandruff shampoo is that it has to essentially do one thing, and that is to kill the fungus. Some shampoos out there do not necessarily kill the fungus but rather reduce the visibility of the flakes. One thing you should look for when buying your anti-dandruff shampoo is a product that contains either zinc or Ketoconazole. Why these two? Well, there have been many studies done on the effectiveness of these chemicals in the elimination of the fungus.

Just as a side note, in order for you to have noticeable results from using these shampoos, you need to leave the shampoo in your hair for at least 20 minutes, and not the 5 minutes stated on the packaging. Also, try not to use the same product continuously, but rather alternate between two or three different products to prevent your body from getting used to one particular type. One should also be aware that there are much cheaper natural alternatives that can be made in your own kitchen and are just as effective in killing the fungus.

Shampoo to Control Dandruff and Flakes

Tim Faber asked:

The best shampoo to control dandruff and flakes uses botanical extracts to soothe inflammation and itchiness, while regulating oily scalp that can trap dirt, bacteria, and oil in follicle pores.  Zinc PCA controls secretions reducing flaking leaving hair clean, fresh, and flake-free.

Dandruff is a universal problem that afflicts both young and the old.  It is a common scalp condition caused by clogged pores that affect the scalp, ears, eyebrows, and beard.  In infants, flaking and irritation is commonly referred to as ‘cradle cap’.  Though a source of concern and sometimes embarrassment, dandruff is generally considered harmless.  Severe symptoms, however, may be an indication of more serious scalp problems such as psoriasis, dermatitis, or eczema.

What are the Causes?

Although the exact cause of dandruff is unknown, possible causes include excess oils in or on the scalp or skin, excessive sweating, poor hygiene, warm or hot weather, skin allergies, infrequent shampooing, stress and weak immune system.

Granted, this is an extensive list of causes, but dermatologists and trichologists (those who study hair), generally agree flaking and itching occur when over-active sebum production (oil) combines with product build-up, dirt and fungus creating inflammation – leading to itching, sores, and flakes. Thus, regulating and reducing sebum is the first and most effective step towards prevention.

Flaky Scalp Solutions

Anti-dandruff shampoo commonly is formulated with Zinc PCA.  Zinc naturally inhibits oil secretion and helps irrigate follicle pores of built-up bacteria, dirt, and dead and worn skin cells.  When combined with Panthenol and Jojoba Oil, the scalp gets soothing relief from inflammation that may lead to more serious problems.  Daily shampooing is recommended, and for severe symptoms, twice daily for several weeks may be required.

Additionally, some flaking may be the result of acute or chronic dryness.  Tissue can become inflamed – cracking and splitting – causing localized dry patches that have symptoms similar to dandruff.  For extreme dryness, we recommend Emu Oil products.  Emu Shampoo is rich in moisture and provides super-hydration to the follicle shaft as well as tissue.  Emu Oil is a natural anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory that moisturizes and reduces skin cell separation.

The best shampoo to control dandruff and flakes addresses excess secretion, while healing and repairing sensitive tissue and skin.  Deep-cleaning action helps prevent embarrassing residue, while gentle extracts soothe irritation and itching for healthy, shiny hair.
